Does it pick up the tree needles?

It picks up most of the pine needles in the back yard.

How easy is it to unload the bag and dump it?

It’s not that hard if you set a designated dump area. You will only have organized piles to clean up.

Will this pick up mulch that has washed into grass from flowerbeds?

If your grass is low or has been cut recently it should. Picked up mulch from my grass that blew onto the lawn.

Does it work on very hilly and uneven terrain?

If you’re talking about a regular hill, sure!

Have trouble pushing the thing?

This sweeper is sturdy but lightweight. If the brush height is set to match the surface you are sweeping, it is very easy to push. I cleaned my parking lot-sized driveway of pine needles and cones in about 15 minutes.
