F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I water my new trees?
The frequency and quantity of water required for a new tree is going to depend on several factors such as the type of tree, type of soil, perk condition of the soil, current environmental conditions, and growing zone, etc. My best recommendation is to research the species of tree . However, as a general guideline, the following can be used:
They should be watered at these intervals: For 1-2 weeks after planting, water daily. For 3-12 weeks after planting, water every 2 to 3 days.
How do you know when you have filled it?
The watering ring should still have some “give” to it when pressed/touched. It is not intended to become hard or overly firm.
Why is this called eco friendly?
The statement of eco-friendly is predicated on the ability of these devices to slowly provide water to a specific area over a period of time (15 gallon in 5-8 hours). This prevents unintended wasting of water (a very precious natural resource) through use of unmonitored/uncontrolled running of hoses, non-timed sprinkler systems, etc.
The average GPM (Gallon per Minute) supplied by a garden hose is ~12. Using simple math; 12 x 60 = 720 gallons per hour. At 5 hours (5 x 720), this equates to 3600 gallons. Hydro-Seep uses .004 of that quantity.
Will this withstand freezing temperatures?
The material itself will withstand freezing temperatures though it is not recommended to attempt to manipulate it (fold, bend, etc.) in freezing temperatures.
It will not insulate water from freezing and should not have water stored in it during freezing temperatures as water will expand, potentially damaging the unit.
How does the water get out from the bag?
The water drains out slowly thru two small valves on the bottom side of the device. The entire bag of water empties in 20 to 40 minutes, giving the water a chance to soak into the ground..

Rolly –
I initially bought two last fall and used them for about a month or so on some newly planted trees that weren’t responding to being watered with a hose. They worked great and the trees responded quickly and started looking much better. We then drained any excess water and stored them for the winter.
Nate –
These worked fantastic when they were working and provide an excellent drip for getting new trees to develop deep roots
Justin –
I work in the horticultural field, and used this a lot when I managed an arboretum. This product are also widely used by arborists to maintain newly planted street trees. They worked great, so I ordered a couple to use in my home landscape.
Paul –
I am thrilled with this and have been using for a few weeks. I will be happy to get one good season out of it, but hopefully more. I’ll update you.
Macy –
I highly recommend it, but please carefully read the information and directions before purchasing to see if it fits your needs. You could easily get this around a 7 inch tree or greater. Just pull the opening apart a bit.
Gerald –
I love this device. It does exactly what it says it does.
Markz –
These are great! Cuts way back on the time spent watering our newly planted trees. We (two of us with separate hoses) fill all 14 of these bags in well under an hour, it takes about 5 or 6 hours for the bags to empty and the root ball is kept wet over long periods.
Markz –
The root balls stay nice and wet, the bags act as a funnel for the rain collecting and directing it to the base of the tree. The bags also keep the weeds and grasses out of the drip zone. very helpful product.
Noi –
This is definitely the best option for long term tree watering if you don’t have the ability to set up a drip irrigation system.
Jame Mi –
I bought one of these for my newly planted Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud. I had been water logging the poor thing with a hose trying to at least moisten the root system. This tree does NOT like to be soaked, but its newly establishing roots need deep, even moisture. So, I found this product and bought it and thanks!! its helps me a lot.
Christian –
My 5 fruit trees are a year old and producing apples, peaches and a few cherries. I didn’t want to have to guess how much water to put on the roots for all-around growth. I read the reviews and decided to purchase these. They are very easy to use. Based on another reviewer’s comment, I bought separately a small twist on-off brass nozzle to easily fill them. I didn’t have to go back and forth to the outside faucet . Turning open the faucet and nozzle, each bag filled quickly. Just be careful of one’s back as you are bent over holding the fill slot up and the bag gets heavy. I would suggest care in mowing and trimming near them and temporarily folding them up so they aren’t damaged during that chore.
vivi –
Now that the extreme summer heat is here, I needed something to keep newly transplanted shrubs watered on days when I either can’t or don’t feel like venturing outside to water. These generously sized watering bags (a set of two) fit the bill perfectly.
flerry –
Seems durable/heavy weight. Low profile. Blends in. I’m good with the product. Better than those flimsy green bag eyesores that spring leaks if a twig gets near them.
